Germany Against Ivory Coast: Undav the Super-Sub Strikes Twice as Germany Secure Dramatic Comeback

Germany Against Ivory Coast offered one of the most intriguing dramas so far. The Germans clinched a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over the Africans in Toronto, booking their place in the World Cup knockout stages with a game to spare. On an evening filled with tension, Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav solidified his reputation as Julian Nagelsmann’s ultimate “super-sub,” netting a dramatic stoppage-time winner to maintain the Nationalelf’s perfect start in Group E.

The victory marks Germany’s 11th consecutive win in all competitions, a spectacular run dating back to September 2025. With six points from two matches, Nagelsmann’s side have banished the ghosts of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, where they suffered consecutive, humiliating group-stage exits. A draw in their final group match against Ecuador will now be enough to guarantee top spot.

Despite the celebratory mood, it was far from straightforward for the four-time world champions. Nagelsmann named an unchanged starting lineup following their opening 7-1 demolition of Curaçao, which included a historic milestone for veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who became the all-time record appearance maker for a goalkeeper in World Cup history with 21 matches.

Germany dominated the early exchanges. Joshua Kimmich’s precise cross found Kai Havertz in the 10th minute, but his powerful header was brilliantly turned away by Ivorian keeper Yahia Fofana. Moments later, Jamal Musiala unleashed a signature driving run and strike from the edge of the box, before Felix Nmecha saw a deflected long-range effort loop just over the crossbar. Germany even had the ball in the net via Aleksander Pavlovic, but the referee ruled it out for a controversial foul on Fofana.

Against the run of play, it was Emerse Faé’s side who broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. Flying left-back Ismaël Diallo drove forward and crossed towards Amad Diallo. The winger’s initial effort was blocked by Nathaniel Brown, but former Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessié reacted quickest to smash home the rebound, leaves Neuer helpless. Germany responded furiously but had a second goal chalked off before halftime for a Musiala infringement, while Florian Wirtz wasted a golden opportunity from close range.

The halftime interval brought bad news for Germany as centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck was forced off with an injury, replaced by Antonio Rüdiger. The Ivory Coast began the second half sharply, with Amad Diallo terrorising the German left flank. Sensing the game slipping away, Nagelsmann made a decisive triple substitution in the 60th minute, throwing on Undav, Jamie Leweling, and Nadiem Amiri for Musiala, Leroy Sané, and Pavlovic.

The tactical gamble paid immediate dividends. In the 68th minute, Amiri whipped an incredibly sharp cross from the right wing, and Undav was perfectly positioned to poke it home from close range, levelling the scoring at 1-1.

The final minutes yielded breathless drama. The Ivory Coast squandered a golden opportunity to snatch a winner in the 89th minute, triggering an immediate German counter-attack. Wirtz found Brown in the box, whose fierce shot was kept out by a stunning Fofana save. Seconds later, Amiri shot directly at the keeper after being teed up beautifully by Undav.

Just as a draw seemed inevitable four minutes into stoppage time, Germany’s relentless pressure broke the African resistance. Nmecha threaded a phenomenal pass through to Undav, who turned his marker with elite composure and fired a clinical strike past Fofana to spark wild German celebrations and secure a historic 2-1 victory.

As for the hero in this match, Deniz Undav’s journey to the pinnacle of international football is one of the most unconventional and inspiring success stories in modern sports. Born in Varel, Germany, to a Kurdish-Yazidi family with roots in southeastern Turkey, he began his football path in the youth academy of Werder Bremen. However, the academy released him in 2012 due to his short stature. Rather than giving up, Undav spent years grinding through Germany’s lower divisions with teams like TSV Havelse, Eintracht Braunschweig II, and SV Meppen, steadily honing his clinical finishing and highly intelligent spatial positioning inside the box.

His breakthrough onto the European radar came after moving to the Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in 2020, where he helped fire the club to top-flight promotion and finished the 2021–22 season as the league’s top scorer and Belgian Footballer of the Year. Following a brief spell in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion, Undav returned to Germany with VfB Stuttgart, exploding in the Bundesliga by netting 18 goals in his debut 2023–24 season. Having never represented Germany at any youth level, his relentless domestic form earned him his first senior international call-up in March 2024 at the age of 27. Making history as the first footballer of Yazidi heritage to represent Germany at a major tournament, he has cemented his place as an elite, dual-footed striking asset for both club and country.
