Real Madrid is a Spanish football club based in Madrid, founded in 1902. The club plays its home matches at the Santiago Bernabeu and is the most successful club in European football, with a record 15 European Cup and UEFA Champions League titles. It’s main rival is FC Barcelona and the match between is known as El Clasico, the most popular derby in the world. And here is a link to their official website for additional resources.
The club’s rise as a major European force accelerated during the presidency of Santiago Bernabeu. With players including Alfredo Di Stefano, Francisco Gento, Ferenc Puskas and Raymond Kopa, Real Madrid won the first five editions of the European Cup between 1956 and 1960. A sixth European title followed in 1966. The Santiago Bernabeu stadium, originally opened as Nuevo Chamartin in 1947, was renamed in honour of the club president in 1955.
Success continued across different generations. Real Madrid returned to the summit of European football by winning the Champions League in 1998, ending a 32-year wait for the trophy. Further victories followed in 2000 and 2002, with Zinedine Zidane scoring his famous volley against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 final at Hampden Park.
The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 preceded another remarkable period in the club’s history. Alongside players such as Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Marcelo, Casemiro and Gareth Bale, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win four Champions League titles between 2014 and 2018. Three of those trophies were won consecutively under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018, an unprecedented achievement in the modern Champions League era.
Real Madrid added further European titles under Carlo Ancelotti. They defeated Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League final in Paris before beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley in 2024, with Vinicius scoring, to secure their 15th European Cup. The latter triumph meant Madrid had won the competition six times in just 11 seasons.
Domestic success has been another constant throughout the club’s history. Real Madrid have won more than 30 Spanish league championships as well as numerous Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup titles. Their history also includes UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cups and multiple world club titles.
Some of football’s most celebrated players have represented Real Madrid. Alfredo Di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas were central figures in the club’s first great European side, while later generations included Emilio Butragueno, Hugo Sanchez, Raul, Iker Casillas and Roberto Carlos. The Galacticos era brought Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham to Madrid, before Cristiano Ronaldo became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The Santiago Bernabeu remains central to the identity of Real Madrid. Opened in 1947, the stadium has hosted major matches including the 1982 FIFA World Cup final, the 1964 European Championship final and several European Cup finals. An extensive redevelopment in the 2020s introduced a retractable roof and pitch alongside major improvements to the stadium’s infrastructure.
From the team that dominated the first years of the European Cup to the Champions League-winning generations of the modern era, Real Madrid have repeatedly built sides capable of succeeding at the highest level. Their record in Europe’s leading club competition remains unmatched and forms the foundation of their status as the most successful club in European football.
